JOY

Hi...I'm in Delaware

For the second day in a row, there was a commercial for Michigan on the radio. Not for Michigan tourism (because as Roger & Me taught us, there is no such thing) but for Michigan living. Talking about how great a place Michigan is to live because they're making artificial kidneys at medical research facilities sponsored by venture capitalists out there. Then the banter says, "medical research? You're talking about Boston, right?" and later "Venture capital? California?" Then they suggest coming on out to Michigan and seeing what all it has to offer, such as the affordable living and shopping malls, that they do not fail to mention.

Damn. Robocop must have been more of a premonition than we thought.

I couldn't make this up if I tried.

On the walk from the Metro to my office this morning, there was a gaggle of Japanese businessmen/tourists taking digital photographs of a pidgeon bouncing from the street onto the curb. Not just one. About ten of the 20 or so guys were crowded around this little bird. The rest of them were taking pictures of each other in front of the hot dog stand.

Bless you, stereotypes.

Backlash

It feels as though all efforts I had been making to improve my social standing with my co-workers came crashing to the ground once I moved out of the cubes and into this shared office. People I was starting to talk with and whose company I enjoyed on a regular basis I rarely see anymore and I feel like I'm back at square one with them.
