First Day of School

Tomorrow morning I start my new job. I'm both nervous and excited. As much of a joke my job at ebuild was; as frustrating as it was to never have work to do before Thursdays at noon, I am going to miss showing up sometime between 9:12 and 9:27, eating breakfast and reading LJ until 10:00, drinking my coffee until 10:30ish, and surfing until the noon smoke. I have to be at work tomorrow at 8:30. Not the 8:48 kind of 8:30, 8:30. I'm going to have to be on the 7:40 bus. I woke up for ebuild at 7:40. My typical work attire was capris with a t-shirt and a pair of flip-flops.

It feels like tomorrow is the first day of school. I had to buy all new clothes: I looked around at the other women in the office while I was interviewing to see what they were wearing and I think I have picked a style that will fit into the dress code, but only bought five outfits just in case I'm wrong. Tomorrow I'm going to wear my new favorite one. I'm going to have a new desk with a new computer and new teachers and a new bus route and everything. I'm sure most of tomorrow will be spent filling out HR forms and other first-day things. Maybe someone will even take me out to lunch.

Usually at this time of year I find myself feeling jealous of the kids going back to high school or college. Summer doesn't seem to mean as much to us grownup types, and while I miss actually being in school, learning, and being challenged, it's the feeling of newness, growth, and beginnings that I think I miss most. It's like New Year's Eve that has a real...reality to it.

The coincidence of my new job starting at the beginning of the school year makes me really appreciate how busy and full my summer has been. I think there were two weekends that I didn't have something planned, and I found myself doing noteworthy things both times. Starting with the PA AGW, to Rob and Leanne's wedding, 4th of July, the day at Meredith and Meghan's, Weird Al, a trip to the beach, another AGW, a visit from thefamilyband (whom I hadn't seen in nearly 5 years), this past Saturday at the Parks' lake house...I know I missed some. It's been dizzying and hectic and probably the best summer I've had in years.

I have my clothes picked out, I got a new haircut today, I've put my favorite hand lotion and my emergency work deo in my gym bag for my desk, my lunch is made and ready to go, and I've got my acceptance form in my purse. This summer has been exactly what I wanted it to be, and I'm ready for the new year.
