Global Perspective

All these stories and posts regarding the elections in Iraq make me cry every time. What a day to count our blessings.

My biggest concern while walking to my polling place on November 2 was whether or not the batteries for my Game Boy would outlast the line. These people walk away from the polls weeping with joy; I walked away happy that it was late enough in the morning that I would be able to pay the non-rush-hour Metro fare.

It's shocking sometimes to realize the luxury of concern; both the luxury to be free of it and to be able victim to it. How fortunate we are not to even have the thought of being killed at the voting booth; how fortunate we are to worry about being overweight, or who's going to win the Oscars, or what size iPod will better fit our needs. And as many times as I try to sit back and understand how good I have it, I know I never truly will.
