Peeve of the Week

While I Still hate the word "pet peeve" calamine_tea has inspired me to post my latest peeve.

Peeve #1237

Overuse of the word "actually". Especially in the workplace. It seems to have so many connotations:

I'm trying not to be too blunt but I really sound bitchy: We discussed that in last week's meeting, actually.

I'm trying to sound authoritative but I just sound stupid: Actually that's not how it works.

Please please please don't think I'm lying: She's actually on the other line right now, can I take a message?

It seems to be becoming the pseud-professional-sounding alternative to "like" or "um". And it must be stopped.
