I'll say one thing: knitting is the best thing to happen to family gatherings since I found out I could smoke in front of my mom. It was wonderful. I was able to occupy myself enough not to care that I was hearing the extended megamix of how my mom got screwed over by the phone company, could wipe away the stain of my sister-in-law's mother's off-color jokes, and was even able to knit in the car. All this while still being able to pay enough attention that I could nod or laugh or mmmhmmm at the right times.
After a few practice swatches and a coaster, I bought my own needles and yarn. I was ready for a real project. 'Tis a scarf for my new coat:
I started it on Saturday afternoon, and between driving, sleeping, and going to the movies, I think I put about 3 hours into it, and it's already a Teletubby long. All this peace of mind and $2.88 scarves too? Where has this been all my life?
